What does carrying the Torch mean to you?
Being selected to carry the Paralympic flame is a great privilege. I will be carrying the flame in honour of those women and men who have fought and are still fighting against an illness or disability, who have gone through difficulties that seemed insurmountable and who, through their strength of character and resilience, have succeeded in achieving sporting and human excellence. Carrying the Paralympic flame is, for me, a mark of deep respect and recognition for athletes who have had to overcome such adversities, and who inspire us all.
As part of ArcelorMittal’s Health and Safety Day in April, we launched the 'Believe in Zero' campaign. Do you Believe in Zero? What do you believe is most important about Health and Safety at work?
We must believe. Belief makes achieving zero possible. Just like athletes who believe themselves to be champions, and then become champions. To achieve zero accidents, we must believe in the value of life and commit to taking care of everyone around us. It must be a shared responsibility, underpinned by belief.
Emir’s manager explains why he was selected to carry the torch.
Emir was nominated for the values he embodies, particularly regarding safety. Also, the current work he is doing with our operations managers, coaching them on the importance of empathy when it comes to effective leadership. His solid beliefs, commitment and hard work are reflective of the spirit of the Paralympic Games.
